Vikingsholm Castle

Located at the head of Emerald Bay, Vikingsholm Castle is one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the western hemisphere. The 38-room mansion was built by wealthy Chicago widow Lora Josephine Knight in 1928. She wanted to create a summer home that would compliment the natural surroundings.

The Vikingsholm was built with native stone and timber. Most of the materials came from the Tahoe Basin. The construction took six months to complete. The property was vandalized in the 1960s, but has since been preserved. The property passed through several owners. Eventually the State of California purchased the property in 1953 for $150,000.

The original residents of Vikingsholm were the Native American Washoe people. This tribe had been living in the Lake Tahoe area for thousands of years. They spent winters in the Sierras and summers in the lake. The Comstock silver strike of 1859 displaced many of them. During this time Tahoe was established as a summer resort for wealthy tourists who wanted to escape from the hustle and bustle of California cities.

The Knight family used the property as a summer home for over thirty years. The property changed hands between several owners before the State of California purchased it in 1953. The caretaker and his family remained on the property year-round. A yardman was hired each season to maintain the grounds.

Lora Josephine Knight had traveled to Scandinavia on several occasions to gather ideas for her home. She wanted to create a Nordic-style home in Lake Tahoe. She also visited old stone castles in southern Sweden to gain inspiration.
